The Level 4 Lockdown period has certainty presented many challenges for businesses, and with the move now into Level 3, and the uncertainty as to what the future will look like, business owners and managers will need to ensure that they keep then finger on the pulse at all times.

The reality is that, even with many businesses restarting, it will not be a return to business as normal and that restructuring of some form will still be required over the next few months as we realign our business structures and employment terms and conditions to what might be the predicted new normal.

Over the last six week period we have assisted many businesses to either restructure their staff resources, including unfortunately having to end the employment of many staff, or renegotiate the terms and conditions of employees to enable them to retain staff at a lower cost.

These processes are expected to continue over the next three to six months as we gain a better understanding of what the NZ economy will look like for late 2020 and early 2021 – and what it will take to recover.

Within the work completed to date we have identified that a number of companies do not have up to date employment agreements and very few employment agreements contain in-adequate provisions to enable them to address events, such as a pandemic, in a comprehensive and expedient manner.
